about

Sharing the enthusiasm to merge simultaneously the best of two worlds — organic and electronic music, the Berlin-based producers Distoport and Sebastian Gabriel team up as the duo Kútus, focusing on the slow multicultural music's seductiveness; an unconstrained musical framework coupled with a breaking of the 4×4 contract. With roots in Ecuador and Peru, they consider themselves as part of the slow-music movement and affirm their commitment to the listeners, because music is about connecting with people’s emotions. It’s personal and at the same time, universal.

Guitarist since the age of 13, Distoport has a background in an Indie Rock band and currently is becoming a professional sound designer. His passion for different instruments from variety of cultures has motivated him to learn to play more instruments and implement them in the process of electronic productions. Instruments like the South American charango, the quena, the Pan Flute, and the Turkish bağlama. On the other side, Sebastian Gabriel’s discovered his affection for electronic music at the well-known Fusion Festival 10 years ago. As a Berlin native he enjoyed nightlife there to the fullest but now is directing efforts on his own music projects. Hence, their second EP titled 'Yamii' is the modus in which they found to channel the feeling and their own view on the downtempo, using their personal filters and mutual interests in order to come up with tracks that you can either listen at home, outside or at a party.

Coming from the era of organic electro, in a way, pairing machine programming with dazzling live performance, the EP is a combinative conjuncture that reminds of desert house, spiritual deep house and andes step, no matter how much we do not agree with genre labeling, the intent is not to strictly limit or exclude music. Also, it is trully filled up with non-perfect grooves, featuring of other artists, drums patterns usually swinging and full-length parts that were played on non-digital instruments. Beneath its easygoing surface, an overwhelming mix of sounds, voices, and emotions can be found over its 24-min length, appearing organic and laidback while being full of sonic nuance.

The opening track 'Yamii', which also gives name to the 4-track package gathered by the duo, has a nice syncopated rhythm along characteristically bucolic chords, where they're experimenting with a Bachata sounding guitar which reminds of Latin soundtracks. 'Intuition' encompass a territory of experimentation and was written in a jam session with the trained singer and songwriter MN.JA and further, the percussionist Perifary added his Hang Drum's touch. By its Caribbean vibes, 'Kermesse' adds a psychedelic twist considering the previous two tracks. Plus, the only original track that got a remix, a work made by the Costa-Rican Berlin-based retrofuturistic live act performer Aloe.

Certainly, they'll continue to spend a huge studio-time chasing the development of artistic cooperations and expanding the duo's unique universe, with many more artists with different backgrounds, as this is what keeps them going. Kútus comes across both as a genuinely likeable project, curious about the mysterious ways of Downtempo and a passionate and engaged couple. Long may they continue to be so.
